How borehole pricing works

Drilling is priced per metre drilled. Casing, the pump system, flow test and licensing are separate lines. Depth is the biggest cost driver, and nobody knows it exactly before drilling: near Sintra, a local driller cites neighbouring boreholes of 40 m and 100 m.

DepthDrilling only at €45–50/m (Lisbon/Sintra)
30 m€1,350–1,500
50 m€2,250–2,500
80 m€3,600–4,000
100 m€4,500–5,000
150 m€6,750–7,500
Simple arithmetic: depth × price per metre. Excludes casing, pump, licensing and VAT.
Geology. The granite and syenite of the Sintra hills drill slower than the sedimentary rocks of the Oeste or the Tagus floodplain.
Diameter & casing. Irrigation boreholes need wider holes and stronger casing.
Pump & equipment. Usually quoted separately; €2,150 + VAT for a 2 hp stainless pump set in a published 2025 quote.
Licensing. Always required. Prior notification with no fee up to 5 hp; permit with fee above. We handle it.
Dry borehole. Drilled metres are usually paid even if the borehole is dry, often at a reduced rate (€20/m in a real 2026 quote). Get this in writing.

Farm and drinking-water boreholes

Irrigation or industrial boreholes need larger diameters and pumps; a Spanish reference puts deep farm wells at €8,000 to over €30,000. For drinking water, the wellhead must be sealed and the water tested by an accredited lab — and where mains water exists, a borehole generally cannot replace it for drinking.

Cost FAQ

What is the price per metre for borehole drilling near Lisbon?

€20–60 per metre across Portugal (average around €30/m), and €45–50/m in the Lisbon and Sintra area according to a local driller (July 2026). Hard rock pushes the price towards the top of the range.

What does a complete borehole cost?

Quote platforms put a complete domestic borehole at €4,000–8,000 (Habitissimo: €6,000–8,000 in Lisbon). idealista gives €4,000–8,000 without the pump. Farm boreholes with large flows are a different, larger project.

Is the pump included?

Usually not. In a published 2025 quote, a 2 hp stainless-steel pump with control panel, pressure tank, pipe and cable for a 150 m borehole cost €2,150 + VAT.

What does licensing cost?

A prior notification (pump up to 5 hp) has no administrative fee. Where a permit is required, APA's assessment fee can be under €200 for a private abstraction (€159.52 in a real 2026 case); the driller's final report is charged separately.
